How to Fringe: an opening day cheat sheet

Today’s the day! The 26th annual New Zealand Fringe Festival in Wellington is officially open and the next 3 weeks will see over 150 events and 1,100 performers shaking their bits about our creative capital. With so much on offer, we’ve gathered some of our essential information in one simple blog post to give you the lowdown on the easiest ways you can Fringe harder than you’ve ever Fringed before.

Our Fringe Box Office is open for business! The rad people at Rex Royale have loaned us the front area of their shop so we’ve Fringe-ified the F out of it. You can drop in to the Box Office which will be staffed by Fringe experts to help YOU maximise your Fringe experience. Here you can grab tickets, info, tees, totes, addict cards and all things Fringe. Give us a call on (04) 212 4725 or email

Buy an ADDICT CARD for just $15 and save nearly 30% on all your Fringe tickets. Tickets become (on average) $12 with this mighty little card. As well as free entry to Fringe events, you’ll also get extra special deals during the Fringe (like drink specials at some Fringe venues). Fringe addict tickets prices are listed in the programme as ‘FA’.

Purchase yours on our MERCHANDISE page or pick one up from the Fringe Box Office (106 Cuba Street), BATS Theatre, or Fringe at the Gryphon (FatG).

Bargain hunters paradise – great discounts, 2-4-1 deals or ticket giveaways! Fringe Festival RUSH TIX will be available 12-2pm Monday to Friday during the Fringe. Sign up to our RUSH TIX mailing list to receive details on daily deals and where the Fringe RUSH TIX Bicycle will be that day to claim your Fringe swag!

Are you searching for a late night taste of what the Fringe has to offer? Preferably hosted by suave, hilarious local talent? Do you yearn for tasty beverages at reasonable prices to enjoy surrounded by debonaire, artistic local talent? Just not quite ready to go home after that last show and want to hang out with fabulous creative types?

Look no further!

FRINGE BITS - for a bit of everything Fringe. It’s our late night variety showcase and it’s FREE for you every Thursday and Friday during Fringe at VK’s Comedy & Blues Bar from 10.30pm. With sneak peaks of shows, interviews, giveaways, news and booze. Hosted by Jean Sergent. JOIN THE FACEBOOK EVENT.

This year the whole family can celebrate Valentines Day with Fringe, and chalk! On Sunday 14 February we’ll be down on the Taranaki St Wharf (the water side of the Wharewaka) chalking up a storm and wearing our hearts on the pavement. Everyone is welcome, this is a great family event, share the love with chalk designs and drawings. You can draw anything you love – pirates, unicorns, trees, flowers, family, bees, dogs, bears or Batman, that guy over there. The city provides the space, Fringe provides the chalk, you provide the art! AND IT’S FREE!
Instagram your creations to @NZFringe to go in the draw for prizes. JOIN THE FACEBOOK EVENT.
With support from Crayola.

Having trouble deciding what to see? Why not use our FILTER BY GENRE feature on our website or click on a date and see what’s on that day? We encourage you to take risks, go to things you might not otherwise go to. Who knows, you may stumble across a gem…

We hope you enjoy the festival.
