Mary Bumby's Hive of Story

Mary Bumby's Hive of Story

Imagined Worlds

This event is koha at the door.

On March the 19th, 1839, the very first honey bees, Apis Mellifera, arrived on the shores of Aotearoa. The name of the person who bought the two straw skeps of bees will be forever etched in your mind, because of its almost story book quality - Mary Bumby.

Mary Anna Bumby was the sister of the Reverend John Bumby, Wesleyan Minister and appointed Superintendent of the Mungungu Mission, Hokianga. Mary travelled out with him as a companion and housekeeper to New Zealand, bringing his favourite breakfast ‘tipple’ – honey for his toast, and the black Yorkshire bees that made it.

This piece was first developed and performed on site at the Mungungu Mission in the Hokianga to mark the 180th anniversary of the honey bees' arrival.

It involves a prophecy, a hive of story and plenty of cross pollination.

A highly interactive and humorous excursion into a world where Apis Mellifera and New Zealand’s past and future meet to make something sticky and sweet.

Suitable for open minded types aged 8 - 99 years.

"I've been lucky to see some wonderful theatre in my life. It is the ones that stay with you forever that really count. Mary Bumby is definitely now part of my forevers. (Along with Sir John G's one man show, Tim Balme's 'Ballad of Jimmy Costello', & Witi Ihimaera's 'Woman Far Walking').”
