Home Ground: Carving Our Name Into the Space

Praying Mantis Productions

Home Ground is a multi-disciplinary community arts initiative, working with women in the Justice system. Artists collaborate with women in prison and the community, to address some of the issues women and whānau face in the justice system.

As part of Home Ground’s Project Whā, participants created four digital advocacy films in collaboration with artists. These are based on women’s experiences of the justice system and their reintegration back into the community.

Home Ground will showcase these beautiful experimental films during the Fringe Festival, to advocate for the incredible talent and passion communicated by these women.
There will be opportunities for the audience to participate in a Q&A session, and discuss the mahi with those involved.

We hope that Home Ground provides the foundation and the space for women in the justice system to feel valued and have a true sense of self. To have a voice, to be heard and understood.

One of the Home Ground project outcomes we have is that women with lived experience of the justice system will see themselves represented in the work, see value in their artistry and make visible their contribution to the body of work that Home Ground creates during their time on the project.

The big question for us was, how do we want people to feel at the end of what we put out into the world? Our answer was -

“That the creativity born of our lived experiences is recognised not only as showcases in courage and growth, but also as a wellspring to inform conversations for women, about women and with women; throughout the justice and corrections space.” - Project Whā collaborator

Our hope is that audiences will leave feeling a greater understanding of the impact of the justice system, that they have listened to what these women have to say.
