The Judgment of Paris

The Queen's Closet

Critically acclaimed Wellington period instrument orchestra The Queen’s Closet is performing a new semi-staged edition of the 1701 opera, “The Judgment of Paris.” Four composers, full baroque orchestra, one god, three goddesses, and an opportunistic shepherd assigned the task of awarding one a golden apple...it will be an event to behold!

In 1700 four leading London composers (Godfrey Finger, John Eccles, Daniel Purcell and John Weldon) were set the task of scoring William Congreve’s libretto, “The Judgment of Paris,” in a competition designed to popularise opera in England. The result in 1701 saw John Weldon declared the winner, with Godfrey Finger famously coming last and leaving London forever in a huff. The Queen’s Closet is performing the opera using music from each of the surviving scores. Sadly, Finger’s entry has been lost, but if you listen closely, we’ll sneak in some other gems from Finger’s surviving theatre music.

Repertoire such as this, from Restoration London, is The Queen's Closet's inspiration and speciality, covering the gamut from dramatic and serious to joyous and irreverent. With our sense of style and fun, we will bring this 300-year-old music to life for Wellingtonians today.

The ticket price includes light refreshments, and there will be a cash bar operating.
